This series consists of descriptions of buildings at the Pipestone Indian School prepared on standard form 5-366. The descriptions include structure designation; construction date; construction costs; materials used; utilities installed; building dimensions; general condition; and repairs, additions and modifications to the original structure. Photographs of the Subsistence House and Employee Cottage are included with the report for these buildings. A blueprint of the Pipestone Indian School giving building locations and a photostat of a map of Pipestone City showing the reservation location in relation to the city are included.

Pipestone Indian Industrial Training School

Established in 1893, the Pipestone Indian School was built on land taken from the Yankton reservation at the Pipestone Quarry. The Yankton people long contested that loss and won before the Supreme Court in 1926. In 1894 the formation of the Pipestone Indian Training School was authorized on the uninhabited Yankton Pipestone reservation. At that time the majority of Native Americans in Minnesota were Ojibwa and they dominated the school's enrollment throughout its history. The school had grad...
